The weather in the Canary Islands is warm and sunny almost all year round, with temperatures ranging from around 18°C in winter and way above 25°C in the summer. The seven islands are all Spanish, but their nearest mainland neighbour is Morocco, which lies 95 kilometres east of Fuerteventura. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, the Canary Islands are much further south than Mediterranean destinations, making them a great choice for a winter sun holiday. Virtually perpetual sunshine is one of the main reasons why the Canary Islands are such a holiday hit.
Things to see & do
There's more to holidays in the Canary Islands than just sunshine. Each island is different, but they all offer an array of activities including diving, water parks, snorkelling, jeep safaris, horse riding, fishing, boat trips, windsurfing, golf, shopping, biking and hiking. In Tenerife, don't miss stunning Mount Teide or Loro Parque animal park. Haggle over local food and artwork at the lively Teguise market in Lanzarote, or visit Timanfaya volcano for an unforgettable day out. Over on Fuerteventura, Oasis Park is home to beautiful botanical gardens and a great zoo. The spectacular sand dunes of Maspalomas are a must-see when visiting Gran Canaria, while in quieter La Palma you may choose to discover untouched forests, or take to the Atlantic for a day of whale watching.
Nightlife in the Canaries is varied depending on the resort and the island. The two liveliest resorts are Tenerife's Playa de las Americas and Gran Canaria's Playa del Ingles, where revellers head for clubbing and late nights. Fuerteventura's main resort Corralejo and Lanzarote's Puerto del Carmen offer plenty of pubs and karaoke bars. On each island, the established resorts have a good choice of bars and clubs and many hotels offer in-house, family friendly entertainment. There's a type of nightlife for everyone in the Canary Islands.
