This small island offers idyllic scenery and a laidback lifestyle. It might be French territory, but Corisca is actually located just off the coast of Italy, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. The stunning coastline is home to mile upon mile of quiet beaches (think soft sands edged by the bluest of waters.) Inland, it’s all rolling hills and dense forests. Corsica enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, which is one of the island’s main attractions. In July and August, daytime highs often peak at 29°C, with the weather still pleasantly warm in May, June and September. The island’s chilly winters mean that holidays to Corsica tend to be taken during the long, hot summers.
Things to see & do
On Corsica, most holidays tend to revolve around the beaches. With miles of deserted sands and shallow waters, theyre just perfect for kicking back and soaking up the Mediterranean sunshine. Watersports are available in abundance here, with sea kayaking, windsurfing and kite surfing all on the menu. Those who want to explore beneath the Med wont be disappointed either; the waters surrounding Corsica offer some of the best diving and snorkelling sites in the region. Art lovers shouldnt miss the Palais Fesch in Ajaccio, home to Frances largest collections of Italian paintings outside the Louvre. Inland, the rugged mountain scenery makes for superb cycling and hiking.
On most Corsica holidays, life in the evening involves nothing more lively than a relaxing meal at an outdoor table. But thats not to say theres no nightlife at all on the island; the established resorts all have plenty of venues that stay open after dark. In Calvi, choose from sophisticated bars at the marina and openair clubs on the outskirts of town. Choose from an array of bars in Ajaccio, or head to one of the discos in Bastia(popular with students and a younger crowd.) In the port part of Bonifacio, a smattering of clubs stay open after midnight, whilst Porto Vechhio is home to several establishments that stay open until 4am.
Food & drink
Eating out is integral to Corsican culture. With a mixture of French and Italian influences, as well as plenty of freshly caught seafood, there are plenty of excellent restaurants on the island. Pull up a chair at the harbour in Calvi and enjoy catch of the day with beautiful views. It goes without saying that the pasta, pizza and ice cream on Corsica are delicious. Self catering holidays in Corsica give you the opportunity to eat out or cook with local produce head to a bustling market and pick up speciality cheeses and island honey. Dont miss a chance to try a glass of the local wine, too.
