The weather in Madrid is changeable, depending on the time of year. In summer, temperatures often soar to the late thirties, which is why afternoon siestas and late nights are commonplace. Soaring temperatures are made more bearable by low humidity, air from the surrounding mountains and cooler evenings. Although Madrid is a fairly dry city, there’s more chance of rain in spring and autumn, but pleasantly warm temperatures make Madrid city breaks popular at these times of year. Winters are chilly, with snow sometimes falling in the coldest months, but bright skies and up to five hours of sunshine per day mean it’s still great to visit at this time of year.

Things to see & do

Youll find plenty to see and do on city breaks in Madrid. Theres shopping, sightseeing and peoplewatching aplenty. Sprawling Retiro Park is a favourite haunt of locals and tourists alike, with its botanical gardens, street entertainers and grand boating lake. Catch a glimpse of worldfamous artworks in The Prado and Reina Sofia galleries. For a family day out, take the el Telefrico, the cable car over Casa de Campo to the the Parque de Atracciones amusement park. Further afield, Toledo makes for an interesting excursion, with its pretty buildings and important religious memorials.

As youd expect from a city of its size, Madrid has an eclectic nightlife, with areas and scenes to suit most tastes. This place is famous for having more bars per capita than any other European city! Around main square Sol, youll find a huge choice of bars, many with traditional Spanish tiling and decor. Some establishments serve up tapas with orders of beer and sangria. The hippest haunts in Madrid are in the Lavapis and Malasaa districts, Huertas is home to the large clubs that often play host to big name DJs and Chueca has a vibrant gay scene. Just like in the rest of Spain, the real partying tends to start after midnight. Whatever your idea of a great night out, theres something for you on Madrid holidays.

Food & drink

Madrid is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city and home to a plethora of restaurants. Youll spot all the big name fast food joints and coffee shops here, as well as some smaller, independent establishments. International options include Lebanese cafes, shisha bars and Chinese buffets. But no Madrid holiday would be complete without typically Spanish food. Pull up a table at a pavement cafe, order sangria or beer and tapas and watch the city go by.
