Kefalonia is the largest and most beautiful of Greece’s Ionian Islands. Holidays in Kefalonia have increased in popularity since the famous book, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, was released as a film in 2001. The island of Kefalonia boasts beautiful beaches, hidden coves, rugged hillsides, pine forests and picturesque fishing villages. Argostoli, the island's capital, oozes traditional Greek charm with charming old architecture and a busy strip lined with shops and tavernas. Just up the road from Argostoli is Kefalonia’s largest resort, Lassi, with its long stretch of golden sand and wide choice of accommodation. Other popular resorts on the island include: Ayia Efimia, Kato Katelios, Lourdas and Skala. A sight not to be missed during the summer months is the female loggerhead turtles that come ashore to nest all along the western and southern beaches of Kefalonia. Why not follow in the footsteps of Captain Corelli and enjoy a holiday in Kefalonia this summer?
If you can pull yourself away from the islands beaches, theres lots to experience on Kefalonia. Take a tour of the Drogorati Caves and Lakes of Melissani, go hiking in Mount Aenos, explore the charming harbour of Fiskardo or take a ferry over to Zante to visit the Blue Caves. Explore the local marine life on a glass bottom boat trip along the coast. Get out into the local countryside on a bike, horseback or on foot. Retrace the steps of Captain Corelli by visiting Pelagia in Sami and the stunning Antisamos and Myrtos bays and spot the famous film locations. For some great shopping, Argostoli is the place to go for leather shoes, bags and belts, handmade jewellery and ceramics.
Kefalonia offers the perfect blend of quiet taverna nights and lively nightlife. The liveliest bars and clubs are to be found around Valliano Square in the islands capital Argostoli while the resort of Lassi and Scala also have plenty of restaurants and music bars along their main streets. For a more traditional evening head to the waterside tavernas and enjoy some local food and entertainment.
There are lots of options to tempt your palate in Kefalonia. Traditional tavernas rub shoulders with Italian, Indian, Chinese and International eateries. You cant go the Greek islands and not sample the traditional mezze, kleftiko, mousakka and freshly caught fish and seafood. Kefalonias speciality is kreatopita (meat pie) made with beef, lamb and pork, all mixed with rice, onion and garlic and topped with pastry. Try mandoles for afters, a sweet dessert made with almonds and caramel. Enjoy Kefalonias famous Robola wine with your meal and, of course, a tipple of fiery Ouzo after dinner.
