Holidays in Santorini offer great food, laid-back charm and majestic views. The breathtaking sunsets and blue-domed churches are among the most photographed scenery in Greece. Wrapped around a long-ago formed caldera (volcanic crater), the tiny island is surrounded by black sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque villages. Clinging to the caldera rim, you’ll find the cosmopolitan village of Thira (or Fira) with shops, bars and restaurants packing its web of streets and alleyways. To the south east of the island are the resorts of Kamari and Perissa, both with long stretches of fine volcanic-sand beaches, watersports and lively bars and tavernas. Sitting high at the centre of the island is delightful and historic village of Pyrgos with great views over the caldera. Accommodation here is among the most stylish in Europe, with chic, minimalist hotels offering infinity pools and boutique rooms. You'll also find a great choice of budget guest houses and affordable, mid-range hotels. Holidays in Santorini suit everyone, from couples and honeymooners to families and single travellers.
There are lots of things to see and do on a Santorini holiday. Santorini has two water sport centres and the water park makes a great family day out. Take a cable car ride to bottom of the caldera at Thira and hop on a donkey for the trip back up to the top. Shop in Thiras boutiques and shops, where handmade Byzantine jewellery and embroidered linens are a good buy. The best place to look for art is Oia, where the picturepostcard views inspire local artists. Take a boat trip to Thirassia, an unspoilt island with picturesque painted houses, a monastery and 20 churches. Visit one of the island's wineries and sample the local wines.
For the best nightlife on the island, head for Thira where youll find bars and clubs overlooking the caldera. Occasional guest DJs appear here during the summer months. Elsewhere, the most lively place is Kamari, which also has lots of bars and clubs. Or for a quiet night enjoy a relaxing meal in one of the informal bars along the caldera. Don't miss the sublime sunset, best viewed from Oia.
Santorini has eateries to satisfy all tastes, from restaurants serving fresh, locally caught fish and seafood to pizzerias and Chinese restaurants. Don't miss traditional Greek food in a small taverna, or wine from local vineyards
