Puerto Plata, on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, was one of the first tourist beach resorts created on the island and remains one of the most popular. Holidays in Puerto Plata centre around the resort's 2km stretch of sand, home to one of the world's best windsurfing spots. The resort also has lots of affordable beachfront hotels to choose from. As you'd expect from a Caribbean island, the weather in the Dominican Republic is good almost all year round. Daytime temperatures rarely dip below the early twenties and often peak at well over 30 degrees Celsius. The rainy season is from May to October, but this doesn't stop thousands of holidaymakers flocking to the tropics during the summer months. In winter, the weather in the Dominican Republic is hot and dry, making it a perfect spot to head for a heavy dose of winter sun.

Things to see & do

The beach is the main focus of holidays in Puerto Plata and the wide selection of watersports on offer. Take a scubadiving or snorkelling trip to the nearby resort of Sousa where youll find reefs, canyons and shipwrecks to explore. Play golf on one of the many courses around the resort. Try your hand at deepsea fishing with Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Mahi Mahi available in the local waters. Take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Isabel for the best views. Visit a rum distillery to find out about and sample the local drink. Get close to the local birdlife at El Morro National Park. Locally sourced amber jewellery and Dominican cigars are a good buy.

The heart of Puerto Platas nightlife is the Malecn the seafront road. Scattered with bars and clubs offering up jazz, salsa and cocktails, this area is the place to head for a lively night out. Theres also the Avenues Hermanas Mirabel and Manolo Tavares where youll find a few hip clubs, pumping out Latino sounds for the younger crowd.

Food & drink

Local food in the Dominican Republic is a tasty mix of Caribbean, African and Spanish flavours with freshlycaught fish and seafood and rice n peas featuring on most menus. Locally grown papaya, mango and passion fruit make for a refreshing dessert. Don't miss a taste of the islands dark rum and Presidente beer.
