To the south of the Hawaiian Islands you’ll find the tropical island of Hawaii. To avoid confusion with the name of the entire state, the Island of Hawaii is often called the "Big Island" - an appropriate name as it’s nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Holidays on Hawaii are packed with dramatic scenery, sandy beaches, colourful flowers, rainforests and waterfalls. The island is also home to Kilauea (one of the world’s most active volcanoes), Maunakea (the world’s tallest sea mountain), Maunaloa (the world’s largest volcano) and, the largest park in the state, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Some of the best coffee grown anywhere can be found on the Big Island and it's also the world's largest producer of orchids. Major resort destinations on Hawaii include the Kohala Coast area, Kona’s historic Kailua Village and Keauhou, while on the east of the island there’s Hilo and Puna. More laid back than some of the neighbouring islands and with it’s excellent year-round climate, a holiday on Hawaii is the perfect choice for couples and honeymooners.

The weather in Hawaii is one of its main appeals. The island experiences consistent temperatures throughout the year. The Hawaii Islands really only have two seasons, the summer months ("Kau") May to October and the winter months (Ho'oilo) November to April. The average daytime temperature at sea level in summer is 85ºF (29ºC) and the average daytime winter temperature is 78ºF (25ºC). The night-time temperatures are approximately 10ºF (5ºC) lower than daytime.
Things to see & do
Holidays on Hawaii centre around the beautiful beaches and the abundance of watersports on offer. Kayaking, manta ray diving, horseback riding and hiking are some of the activities to experience. Reach for the skies on a helicopter tour, for a birdseye view of the island. Take to the water for some big gamefishing for marlin and mahimahi or go whale or dolphin spotting. For the golfers, choose from 18 courses around the island. For coffee lovers take a tour of the coffee farms and mills around Kona. The Hawaii Tropical Gardens and the World Botanical Gardens are the places to get up close to the islands famous orchids.
Like the island itself, Hawaiian nightlife is quite laidback. The busiest nightspots are around the capital Hilo and also in the popular resort of Kailua Kona with its popular Lulus and Huggos on the Rocks. Some of the bigger hotels have bars and inhouse entertainment.
Food & drink
Freshlycaught seafood, tropical fruits and colourful cocktails are just some of the culinary delights to tempt you whilst on holiday in Hawaii. The islands cuisine is influenced from as far afield as Asia, Europe and South America. The traditional Hawaiian feast is the luau, where a puaa kalua (whole pig) is cooked in a fire pit and served with sweet potatoes and plantains. In the main resorts you'll find a huge choice of bars, international restaurants and cafs. Freshly brewed local Kona coffee is the perfect end to a meal.
